Kraxenofen steam bath

A Kraxenofen is a steam bath combined with alpine hay. The name Kraxenofen derives from the term for a hay carrier when hay used to be mowed by hand and carried home. These baskets carried on the back are called Kraxen. For a Kraxenofen steam bath the hay is warmed; this releases essential oils in the hut and the natural compound coumarin, or hydrocinnamic acid, is released. This medicinal substance contained in hay is absorbed via the respiratory tract and has a relaxing, calming, anti-inflammatory and anti-oedemic effect. The heat relieves the strain on the circulatory system of the client and relaxes the muscles.
